What do you get when you mix together famed composer Hiroki Kikuta with the Scarlet Moon music community? You get excellent collaborations like Killashandra & The Five Moons, featuring the original song “Killashandra” alongside five unique arrangements by different artists (hence the “Five Moons”)! (You also get albums like 2015’s Prescription for Sleep: Lullabies of Mana, but hopefully that’s one you already know about.)

“Killashandra” came to be through Mathew Valente, a member of the VGM remixing community. Mathew commissioned Hiroki Kikuta to write a song for his loved ones, and, well, I’ll just quote Kikuta here:

“The song ‘Killashandra’ was written for Mathew Valente and his loved ones,” notes composer Hiroki Kikuta. “The first image that was presented to me was the song ‘Whisper And Mantra’ from Seiken Densetsu 2. However, as you know, ‘Whisper And Mantra’ was written to express the purity and holiness of the Seiken world in particular. As a melody to heal and cheer up the hearts of young people living today, it would be a bit too formal and stuffy. Therefore, I tried my best to create a song with a clean and beautiful atmosphere, but full of emotion, hope, love, joy, and brightness to illuminate the future.”

A lovely sentiment and excellent foundation for any musical project, if you ask me. As you may guess from the cover art, Scarlet Moon was fortunate to have famed Secret of Mana and Trials of Mana artist Hiroo Isono create an original piece of art for the album that evokes that same atmosphere that Kikuta talks about. It’s always nice when the whole package comes together like this, with music and art creating harmony.

Scarlet Moon’s Jayson Napolitano said he “immediately loved” the song, but instead of releasing it only as a single, he invited members of the Scarlet Moon community to arrange “Killashandra” in their own styles.
