In this edition of RPGs Coming This Week, our slate is populated by all manner of rereleases. From the latest high-profile PC port to a remake of an under-the-radar indie title, the industry continues churning out the good stuff, even if most of it isn’t new new. So, join me as we inspect the latest and greatest RPGs!
Dokapon: Sword of Fury – January 21st (Windows)
If you ever feel like speedrunning the end of your friendships, developer Sting has you covered with the latest in its cursed Monopoly-meets-RPG franchise.
Dokapon: Sword of Fury, a remaster of a Japan-exclusive PS1 game, has been out on the Nintendo Switch since 2024. This current release marks its PC debut and English localization. Don’t be fooled by the cutesy veneer — this series is all about screwing over your friends, and I must say it is damn good at bringing out the worst in human beings.
Unlike the preceding entry Dokapon Kingdom: Connect, your goal in Sword of Fury is pure monetary domination. Using strategy, luck, and brazen willingness to betray, players are tasked with amassing enough gold to win. The Dokapon games are fairly simple multiplayer affairs all told, but the real-life situations that arise in each session are priceless and diabolical in equal measure.
Sword of the Necromancer: Resurrection – January 23rd (PS5, XSX, PS4, Switch, Windows)
Here’s an unusual one coming this week. Sword of the Necromancer: Resurrection is a remake of a 2021 action RPG that, while interesting in terms of narrative choices, didn’t exactly set the world on fire as a game. This new version looks to remedy the original’s faults.
It’s a full-blown 3D revamp inspired by the sixth-generation console era (think PlayStation 2, Xbox, and GameCube), and it comes with tons of changes, like redesigned combat, remastered music, and new roguelite and local co-op modes. True to the original, Sword of the Necromancer: Resurrection still centers around turning defeated foes into allies, a feature that might ring a bell for folks who played The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom.
New to the remake, however, is the option to fine-tune each monster’s combat behavior. One issue our reviewer had with the original was that the AI wasn’t very good, sometimes making companions more of a hindrance than helpful. This mechanic is rather unusual to begin with; off the top of my head, I can only recall similar tools in Final Fantasy XII and Unicorn Overlord.
P.S. If you like Resurrection, you might want to keep tabs on the upcoming sequel Sword of the Necromancer: Revenant.
Also Coming This Week
Achilles: Legends Untold – January 23rd (Switch)
Achilles: Legends Untold is bringing gritty, bone-crunching action RPG gameplay to Switch. It’s already out on PC, as well as PlayStation and Xbox consoles.
ENDER MAGNOLIA: Bloom in the Mist (Exiting Early Access) – January 23rd (PS5, XSX, PS4, Switch, Windows)
ENDER MAGNOLIA: Bloom in the Mist will soon emerge from the early access period, and launch for consoles. This moody Metroidvania will run you $24.99 USD when it transitions to version 1.0, so if you want it on PC for even cheaper, consider grabbing it as soon as possible!
Final Fantasy VII Rebirth – January 23rd (Windows)
Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is finally coming this week to PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store. You may have heard of it. I’m willing to go out on a limb and say this is coming to Switch 2 this year. If I’m wrong, feel free to throw (metaphorical) eggs at my face, readers.
Mercenaries Lament: Requiem of the Silver Wolf – January 23rd (Windows)
Huh, I’m surprised this wasn’t already on PC. Mercenaries Lament: Requiem of the Silver Wolf is an under-the-radar strategy RPG with more than a passing similarity to the likes of the Tactics Ogre and Final Fantasy Tactics series. If you need your fix of those classics, consider this potential hidden gem.
Ravenswatch – January 23rd (Switch)
Ravenswatch is coming this week to Switch after exiting early access last September and launching on PS and Xbox consoles in November. This action roguelike features an eclectic mix of playable characters (Little Red Riding Hood and Sun Wukong, among others) to help you take on nightmarish creatures.
Worlds of Aria – January 23rd (Switch)
The tabletop RPG-inspired Worlds of Aria is coming this week to Switch, and it’s got online and local co-op for up to four players, with Steam version crossplay to boot. Star voice actress Laura Bailey is the game’s narrator.
Finally, as one of the site’s newsies, I’d be remiss if I didn’t discuss the Switch 2 a little bit! To say we’re eagerly anticipating the April 2nd showcase… well, that’s putting it lightly. Expect steady coverage of everything within our remit on that console, as soon as they start coming out.
